Gordon Deal ‘85, host of a nationally syndicated radio news talk program and public address announcer for the New York Giants, served as Master of Ceremonies for the event.

The return of the Athletics Hall of Fame followed a 17-year hiatus and afforded Saint Joseph an opportunity to recognize deserving individuals who have made a profound impact on the high school’s storied sports programs.

Saint Joseph has accumulated more than 160 county or conference team championships and more than 40 state team titles in 15 varsity sports. In addition, Saint Joseph has produced hundreds of All-American, All-State, All-County, and All-Conference players, as well as countless college scholarship student-athletes.

A seven-member Hall of Fame Selection Committee, chaired by sports writer Greg Tufaro of the Home News Tribune, who has covered Saint Joseph athletics for nearly three decades, presented nominees for Class of 2019 induction with input from a Hall of Fame Advisory Committee, as well as insight from venerable Star Ledger sports writers Mike Kinney and John Haley, who have combined to cover high school athletics for more than 60 years.

The Hall of Fame Selection Committee bridges the decades spanning the school’s founding through the present and represents a cross section of Saint Joseph athletics programs. The Hall of Fame Advisory Committee consists of current and former Saint Joseph coaches, Partners in Mission (faculty and staff), and alumni.

Members of the Athletics Hall of Fame Selection Committee and Hall of Fame Advisory Committee were chosen after careful consideration to uphold the highest standards in recommending induction only to qualified individuals. The committee members were chosen not only for their insight and historical perspective of the athletics program, but also for their commitment to the Brothers of the Sacred Heart and to Saint Joseph High School’s philosophy of interscholastic sports.

The Athletics Hall of Fame Selection Committee identified, reviewed, and verified the achievements of all qualified nominees before making a final recommendation of inductees to Saint Joseph’s Leadership Committee and Board of Directors, both of which approved the Class of 2019 for induction.

Saint Joseph solicited nominations for the Class of 2019 through a social media campaign, articles at NJ.com and MyCentralJersey.com, an email blast to alumni, and a posting on the high school’s website. More than 50 nominations were received via email and certified mail from Jan. 3, 2019 through the March 1, 2019 deadline.

A total of 27 individuals were inducted into the Saint Joseph Athletics Hall of Fame during a four-year period from 1999 through 2002. This year’s class is the first since then to be inducted.

Inductees bring recognition, acclaim, and pride to the Brothers of the Sacred Heart and to Saint Joseph High School. Their record of sportsmanship and lifestyle of integrity and probity makes them role models for current and future Saint Joseph student-athletes.
